Full Bio

Steve Warzala is a Television and Radio sportscaster.  His journalistic versatility is evidenced by the range of his work to serve as a play by play announcer, color commentator, sideline reporter and studio host.  Steve works as an independent sports broadcasting contractor and provides his services to various media outlets nationally and in the Western, NY area. He has covered a variety of sports from the pro, college and high school ranks, including hockey, lacrosse, football, baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, wrestling and volleyball. 
 

Steve is currently in his 8th season as a play by play announcer for Major League Lacrosse which airs on ESPN ,ESPN 2, ESPN3, CBS Sports Network & NBC Sports Network.  Additionally, he is in his 6th season in a play by play role for the Niagara University Purple Eagles Div-1 men’s hockey team.

In 2010-11, Steve jumped from the collegiate ranks to become the play by play voice of the Ontario Junior Hockey Leagues Buffalo Junior Sabres.

Also in 2010 Steve was also selected by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel to host the opening ceremonies for the Empire States Games, an Olympic style competition for the premier athletes in the State of New York, and then anchored a nightly show that recapped the day’s events over the course of the week.


From 2006 – 2010 Steve also served as the play by play announcer for the Canisius College NCAA Division I hockey and lacrosse teams over those 4 years. 


Prior to working with Time Warner and Canisius, Steve won the “Rookie Contest” at WGR-550 ESPN Radio which provided him with the opportunity to be an on-air pre-game analyst for the Buffalo Bills during the 2006 season.  Steve has also hosted the Derrick Dockery and Jabari Greer TV shows and the Thurman Thomas sports training show which was broadcast on Time Warner Sports Channel. 


Steve got his start in broadcasting in 2000 after a hockey injury sent him up to the broadcast booth as a color analyst for the remainder of the hockey season. Then from 2001 – 2006, Steve served as the play by play announcer for Mercyhurst College NCAA Division I Hockey and called games in the final 16 of the Frozen Four tournament for three of those years. While at Mercyhurst, he also served as sports director for the campus Radio station WMCE, worked on television for the Image Sports Network in Erie, PA and was the MC for the Erie Freeze AIFL Arena Football League.


Steve returned to his native Buffalo in 2006 where he still resides and became the 2006 winner of the “Rookie Contest” at WGR-550 (ESPN Radio), which gave him the opportunity to be an on-air pre-game analyst for the Buffalo Bills during the 2006 season. Steve graduated from Mercyhurst in 2006, with a double major in Communications and Sports Business.
Steve donates his time to Haseks Hero’s, a non-profit organization founded by NHL great Dominik Hasek to foster the development of under privileged children in Buffalo and to Amherst, NY youth hockey where he serves as a coach for many AAA hockey teams. He also coaches hockey at the Varsity level for his high school alma mater, St Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.


He is an avid traveler who loves to experience new cultures and foods across the world. His taste and love of eating eventually parlayed into the role of Director of Food where he writes articles and restaurant reviews for the Buffalo Rising Publication. 

He likes getting out and hitting the links, and still laces up the skates to play in the occasion pick up hockey game. He enjoys taking in Buffalo Sabres & Bills Games, and taking his Terrier Allie out for runs or a game of fetch. He is also the C.E.O. (Chief Eating Officer) and Director of Food for the Buffalo Rising Publication. 

He lived internationally in the town of Neuchâtel Switzerland, where he played 1st Division hockey for the town team the Neuchâtel Sprinters of the Swiss National League.
